As the Nebraska softball season approaches, excitement surrounds Jordy Bahl, whose journey back to the field reflects resilience and passion. For Bahl, the season is about overcoming challenges and embracing the mental and emotional aspects of the sport.
Q: What are you most excited about in the upcoming season?
“Simply getting to take the field with this team. Coming back from injury, it has been a while since I competed, so I am looking forward to that, but this team makes me even more eager to get out there.”
Q: What personal goals have you set for yourself on and off the field this season?
“On the field, to compete no matter the circumstances. I’m trying not to set too many result-oriented goals this season to avoid putting too much pressure on myself after injury. My main goal is to compete fearlessly and surrender the outcomes, knowing I did put in the work.”
Q: How do you mentally prepare for big games or tough opponents?
“For me, it all comes down to preparation. If I feel like I did everything in my power to prepare to the best of my ability, I can take the field fearlessly no matter the result and no matter what team is in the other dugout. If my preparation was not what I know it could have been, I would doubt myself, and usually, when that happens, I never perform to my potential.”
Q: What’s one pre-game superstition or ritual you can’t skip?
“I have to eat a clean meal the night before the game and the morning before the game. I also used to always have an energy drink, but I am trying to cut back on those, so maybe this year, it will just be a cup of coffee. Before taking the field, I always read Psalm 27:1: “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear. The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid.”
Q: What advice would you give younger players aspiring to play at the college level?
“Be okay with making tough sacrifices. To play at the next level, sacrifices will be required. Those are not sacrifices everybody is willing to make, which is okay, but if you buy into the journey, you need to know that it will require making tough decisions. That said, cherish the days you are in now as a young player, and spend as much time with your family and parents!”
